Same-Sex Marriage Becomes Legal in Iceland; Prime Minister Gets Married

Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir married writer Jonina Leosdottir on Sunday, the first day of legal same-sex marriage in Iceland.

Sigurdardottir, who has children from a previous heterosexual marriage, is the world’s only openly gay prime minister but her sexuality has never been an issue in Iceland, which, like the other Nordic states, has a history of tolerance.

The marriage makes Sigurdardottir the first government leader in the world to enter a same-sex marriage. Iceland’s Parliament voted unanimously to approve same-sex marriage earlier this month.

Three cheers for equality and congratulations to the Prime Minister and her new wife!
